Artist statement

My mold-making system allows for the rendering of repeated but individualized forms through puzzle-piecing with modular plaster. Constructing by intuition and controlled by mathematics, pieces are arranged to form multi-faceted molds which produce pillars and tiles. These planar surfaces facilitate my exploration of special effect glaze work and interest in intricate surface design. My surface decoration is achieved through many layers of colors in combination with multiple different glazing techniques each layer combines in unique conglomeration to achieve success.  The intersectionality of a cast forms surfaces that present specific challenges in the actualization of my vision. This vision is generated at multiple stages along the development of a pillar and remains elusive until the final firing. Only when a cast has multiple points of dynamic interest in various orientations is a cast successful.

Bio

Lilly Kueter was a recent resident artist at the Iowa Ceramics Center and Glass Studio in Cedar Rapids Iowa. She is from Dubuque Iowa with her BFA in Ceramics from The University of Iowa and has spent the last year as a post bacc at Indiana University Southeast. Her casts are created using a modular plaster system that was introduced to her by her mentor John Richard and now uses 3D printing to create her own plaster library. Through this system she explores the intersection of control and intuitive creativity.
